This is one of the most beautiful chapters I have read so far. I teach in the nursing program at a college in Southeast Texas and I was speaking on the importance of eye contact. Patients that cannot speak, still need to be spoken to. Many times looking them in the eyes speaks volumes to them about the compassion in our hearts. When they are happy, their eyes tend to close slightly as they smile, when they are frightened, we can see it in their eyes. As I spoke these words in one of my lectures, I saw a student wiping tears from her precious face. At a break she approached me and told me that her son was not able to speak, but he had beautiful eyes and eye contact was how he communicated. She felt as if she could see deep within his heart.
I loved the part in this chapter where Max wrote, "We both saw the man. I saw right through him. Stanley saw deep into him. There is something fundamentally good about taking time to see a person." Thanks, Max for reminding us!
